First Announcement (April 15th, 2003)

================================

Scientific Motivation
During the last ten years, a wealth of fresh data about the distribution of baryonic diffuse matter in the Universe has been made available by space missions like FUSE, CHANDRA, XMM. During the same period, high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have suggested the possibility that a significant fraction of diffuse baryonic matter could be in a ``warm'' phase, far from the hot, central regions of galaxy Clusters. These discoveries and theoretical hints pose new, challenging problems to observational and theoretical cosmologists. After almost two years of operation of CHANDRA and XMM, and with the large amount of data made available by FUSE, time is ripe to discuss how the observational evidence could be matched by theoretical and numerical modelling.
The main aim of the workshop will be that of providing an opportunity to observational and theoretical cosmologists to meet and discuss in the relaxed atmosphere provided by the Vulcano island. The main topics to be discussed will be:

-- Observations of the Local Warm Intergalactic Medium (WHIM)
-- Observations of the Intracluster Medium (ICM) for nearby and distant clusters
-- Numerical Simulations of the WHIM and of the ICM
-- The Interplay between Galaxies and the Intergalactic Medium
-- Metal Enrichment of the Intergalactic/Intracluster Medium
-- QSO Absorption Line Experiments
-- UV Background Evolution and the Gunn-Peterson Effect
-- Intergalactic Magnetic Fields and High Energy Particles
-- Future dedicated space missions

The schedule of the workshop will give equal weight to observational and theoretical issues. We plan to have few invited speakers and to leave wide opportunities for contributed papers (more details about the program will be released in the next Circulars). There will also be opportunities for informal meetings and interactions among the participants. The final aim is that of stimulating the discussion and trying to identify theoretical and computational tools which could address the new challenging physical problems provided by these observations.

G. Bryan (Oxford)
S. Cristiani (ESO)
L. Feretti (Bologna)
B. Forman (CfA)

Practical arrangements
The workshop will be hosted at the Eolian Hotel in Vulcano, a little island in the Tyrrhenian see, few miles north from Milazzo (Sicily). The workshop will begin in the morning of October 1st (Wednesday) and will end before noon of October 4th (Saturday), 2003. Hotel prices are as follows:

-- Full board, Single room: 98 euros per person per day
-- Full board, two-beds room: 82 euros per person per day

Please note that the hotel has only a few single rooms, which will be made available on a "first come first served" basis.
Due to the limited space available in the Hotel's Conference room, attendance will be limited to 60 people, so we suggest you to register as early as possible.
A conference fee of 250 Euros for early registration (i.e. before July 15th, 2003) has been set. After that date, the fee will be 300 Euros.

Vulcano and the Eolian Islands
The group of Eolian Islands has produced a constant fascination on the ancient greek and roman civilizations. They played a central economical and military rolefor all the mediterranean civilizations, due to their strategically important geographical position. The most ancient archeological rests which have been found go back to the Neolitic age (4.000 B.C.), and since then they ahve been continuosly inhabited. During the greek and roman age the Eolian Islands were centers of artistic and economical activities, and they are celebrated in Homer's Odyssey (VIII century B.C.). At our days the Eolian Islands are mostly known for the beauty of their mediterranean atmosphere, for the cleanness of the sea and for hosting some minor volcanic activity. Particularly well known are the solphoric muds of Vulcano, mentioned by Pliny the Elder, and still used today as a thermal resort.
